SANTA CLARA—Move over, Richard Dent. Make way, Ray Lewis.
Von Miller and the 2015 Denver defense are now up there among the greatest players and units of all time after the Broncos crushed league MVP Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers, 24-10 in Super Bowl 50.
“I am thankful I did not have to play against these guys, I can assure you of that,'' said Broncos' quarterback Peyton Manning, who became the only quarterback to win a Super Bowl with two teams. "The (2002) Buccaneers, those Ravens' defenses -- my dad always referenced the late-70s Steelers and '84-85 Bears, so hey, I think to be in the conversation is a heckuva honor.
"Let me tell you, we played against an awesome defense tonight. Carolina was every bit as good as we thought they were. ... Fortunately our defense was even better.’’
The 1985 Bears? While Dent and company were facing Dieter Brock in the NFC Championship, the 2015 Denver Broncos whipped Tom Brady in the AFC Championship.
The 2000 Baltimore Ravens? They beat Gus Frerotte and Jarius Jackson in the playoffs’ first round. These 2015 Broncos whipped Ben Roethlisberger in the second round.

Ray Lewis, the great middle linebacker for those 2000 Ravens, said Friday night the 2015 Broncos would be placed along the pantheon of historically great defense if they finished the job in Super Bowl. Job finished.
"All these guys that came before us, all these legends, I just feel uncomfortable with comparisons,'' said Miller, who was the Super Bowl 50 MVP after his two strip sacks set up the Broncos' only two touchdowns. "But as a unit we played masterfully. Very very proud of all my guys.''
While the ’85 Bears whipped Steve Grogan in their Super Bowl, and the 2000 Ravens took advantage of Kerry Collins, the 2015 Broncos clobbered the great Cam Newton and the Panthers through a relentless pass rush and suffocating coverage, a performance that followed a season-long pattern. The Broncos must have won at least 10 games this season they way they did in the final one.
"We’ve got the greatest defense of all time," said Broncos tight end Owen Daniels, who at 33 isn't old enough to remember his hometown '85 Bears. "I’ve said that over and over. They proved it.
"The '85 Bears had pressure but did they play against guys like Cam Newton? That’s my point. We did it against a guy that’s changed the game the way he’s changed it and to completely shut him down? It’s unbelievable. That’s my take.”

Miller was the only choice for Super Bowl MVP as he was chiefly responsible for both Denver touchdowns. Miller is the Broncos’ left outside linebacker.
A free agent after this season, Miller may well become the NFL’s first $20 million defensive player.

He stripped-sacked Newton that resulted in a recovered fumble for a touchdown by Denver defensive end Malik Jackson.
Miller iced the game by stripping Newton late in the fourth quarter, the fumble recovered at the Carolina 5 yard line. A few plays later, C.J. Anderson – who replaced Ronnie Hillman as the Broncos’ starting running back – hammered in for a 2-yard touchdown with 3:08 remaining. Manning completed a two-point conversion pass to Bennie Fowler and the Broncos started celebrating the third Super Bowl title in franchise history, first since they went back-to-back in 1997-1998.
It also gave John Elway Super Bowl championships as both a starting quarterback and general manager.

“I'm going to say this and I know he would not want me to say this, but,'' Elway said as he held aloft the Lombardi Trophy on the Super Bowl stage. Elway then screamed, “This one’s for Pat!”
Eighteen years earlier, Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, had said, "This one's for John!'' meaning his quarterback Elway, after the Broncos won their first Super Bowl in January, 1998 in San Diego.
Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak also made history. He is the first to play in a Super Bowl (he was part of three), serve as offensive coordinator for two Super Bowl champions (in 1997-98), and win a Super Bowl as a head coach, all for the same team. Kubiak, in other words, will be the first backup quarterback in Broncos history to one day go into the team's Ring of Fame.
With all Super Bowl 50 eyes on Manning who may have played his final game, he was the first to say his defense won that day. Manning is now 2-2 in Super Bowls – 1-1 with the Indianapolis Colts and 1-1 with the Broncos.

He is the only quarterback in history to win Super Bowls with two teams.
Twice Manning committed a turnover – a second quarter interception and fourth quarter strip fumble while attempting to throw -- to give Cam and Carolina great field position.
The Denver defense came back with a three-and-out punt the first time and held Carolina to a field goal the next.
Newton received 48 of 50 votes to win the NFL’s MVP Award on Saturday night. On Sunday he was harried into completing just 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards with an interception for a sub par 55.4 rating. He was also sacked six times. The Broncos got credit for a seventh sack on an attempted flea flicker from receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to Newton.
"We treated him like any other quarterback,'' said Broncos defensive end Derek Wolfe. "So what if he can run? We’ve got guys who can catch him. We didn’t want to give him any lanes. We don’t want to give lanes to any quarterback. Alex Smith, he can run the same way. He’s not as fast.’’

Manning was only 13 of 23 for 141 yards for an equally sub par 56.6 rating. He was sacked five times, but Manning didn’t give Carolina’s defense a touchdown and Cam’s offense essentially surrendered two.
The historic defensive effort took some spotlight from Anderson, who led all rushers with 90 yards on 23 carries with a touchdown. Emmanuel Sanders had six catches for 82 yards.
Sometimes, the sweetest-sounding music is a broken record.
Overall, the Broncos’ offense was average at best. In fact, average may be kind: Its 194 yards in total offense was the worst output by the winning team in Super Bowl history. The Denver defense was sensational, especially while applying pass-rush pressure on the quarterback.
Bad offense and great defense equaled Broncos victory as it happened so many times during a 12-4 regular season and 3-0 postseason.

Before a soldout Levi’s Stadium on a spectacularly warm and sunny Sunday afternoon in early February that was also comprised of roughly 50 percent Broncos fans, 30 percent Carolina fans and 20 percent neutral, Miller, DeMarcus Ware and Denver’s ferocious pass rush on Newton was the difference.
“No chance the 2000 Ravens had a pass rush like this team,'' said Brandon Stokley, a former receiver on the 2000 Ravens. "The pass rush this team had was unbelievable. And the back end was unbelievable. I put that defense with our Ravens for sure. It was special. And they were special in the big games when it mattered the most.’’
Wade Phillips, the Broncos' defensive coordinator, said the key to his unit cementing it's place in history was how it performed in its three playoff games. It held the Steelers, Patriots and Panthers to less than 20 points each. Roethlisberger (three), Brady (four) and Newton (six) were sacked a combined 13 times.
“Especially the way we played the last few games,'' Phillips said. "I was on the other end with the Steelers in the '70s. There’s been a lot of great teams with a lot of great defenses. But in the modern era where the offense can move the ball nowadays, it’s more of a wide-open game, I think we played as good as anybody.”
"t’s no disrespect to those other teams,'' Wolfe said. "I think when you consider this age, the way the game has evolved, in this age, we’re the best to ever do it.”
"We are the best of all time," said Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall. "Nobody can take anything away from us. We played the Steelers, the Patriots, the Panthers. We beat the best teams in the playoffs. Ben Roethlisberger, Tom Brady and then Cam Newton. That's it. Nobody else can say that.''
