James Mejía provides the Democratic perspective on politics for 9NEWS.
James is a Denver native from immigrant Mexican grandparents. He
is one of thirteen Mejía children schooled in Denver Public Schools – all of whom made it to college.
James is a Notre Dame undergrad, and holds master’s degrees from Arizona State in business and Princeton in public policy. He spent a decade in state and municipal government as a political appointee working on government start-ups and turning around agencies. He served in Denver Mayor Wellington Webb’s cabinet as the Manager of the Department of Parks and Recreation and served as Project Manager in the Mayor Hickenlooper administration to build the $425 million Denver Justice Center. He now heads a private consulting firm, Mejía Associates, helping small firms expand into new markets.
James served as an elected at-large board member of the Denver Public Schools Board of Education and ran for Mayor of Denver in the election of 2011, coming in third in a crowded field with 26 percent of the vote. He is a regular contributor to La Voz Colorado weekly bilingual newspaper and his opinion pieces have also been featured in the Denver Post and Huffington Post. He is father to three amazing girls, aged 12, 12, and 6. He has run more than 65 marathons but his wife Heather still holds the family record for the fastest marathon.
