AURORA – An off-duty Jefferson County deputy was
shot in a parking lot across the street from Rangeview High School Tuesday night and is in critical condition, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
Another man was also shot, but is expected to survive, according to Aurora Police.
Authorities are scouring the area for suspects. They released only a vague description (they say he is a black man wearing a brown jacket), but ask residents to call 911 if they see anything suspicious. A helicopter was seen buzzing over the area after the shooting, which happened at 17396 E. Adriatic Dr. – about a block south of East Evans Avenue.
Nearby residents received a reverse notification telling them that K9s are in the area.
Rangeview High School was placed on lockdown as a precaution. Students and parents were let out of the school at around 8:30 p.m. According to the athletic calendar on Rangeview's website, a varsity basketball game was scheduled at the school Tuesday night.
A witness told 9NEWS he held one of the victim's head until police arrived. He says the man was shot twice in the stomach, but was responsive.
"I held his head up and put pressure on his wounds," Mike Marshall said. "He just said 'it hurt, it hurt. Where the hell is everybody?' I said there's people on the way."
Marshall said the deputy told him he was at the apartment complex where the shooting happened to see his girlfriend.
The Denver Police Department, Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County Sheriff's Office are helping Aurora Police look for suspects.
