Shanghai is "destroying" Hong Kong. This is something you could have predicted 20 years ago, when China opened its coast cities to trade.

Hong Kong used to be the only gateway to

trade with the vast domestic market in the Mainland China. Not any more. People are more likely to go to Shanghai to trade because Shanghai offers as much advantage as Hong Kong. Not only Shanghai, but people are now building direct business networks all along the coast of Mainland China.

The result is that this generation of Hong Kongers will not have the same economic opportunity as the previous generation. There is so much existing interest and money tied in banking and real estate that any solution will hurt, yet in the long run the only solution is to back off the "premium" in banking and real estate and re-invest to diversify in, for example, the tech sector.
