A friend of a friend of mine who's just your run of the mill polite Japanese office worker has an interesting story about her high school days...

One day she found out

that a classmate was spreading a photoshopped picture of her face on a porn scene. Her response to this insult to her womanly honor was to bike over to the offending classmate's house and smash their windows. When the offender's parents came outside to see what was going on, she apologized for the destruction caused to them but explained it was in retribution for the ill behavior of their offending daughter, then left.

Of course that story is by no means the typical Japanese high school experience, but it strikes me as a neat example of the idea of 'personal responsibility' that Japanese are known for.
