"It's the show where American kids dress like Asians."

-A Japanese friend's thoughts on Avatar

Avatar is an anime-inspired show in style that takes place in fantasy East Asia and uses

visual conventions from Japan, but other than the visuals it's storytelling and characters are regarded as very 'American' in terms of worldview and values. I've even heard American fans of the show express that it could easily take place in a fantasy Europe and still deliver the same message/story.

The most praise I've heard related to Avatar from East Asians working in the animation industry isn't on the show itself, but the very talented South Korean Studio MIR, which outdid the Japanese Studio Pierrot in animating the 3rd season focused on Avatar Korra.
