“The plane started dropping at a sharp angle, almost vertically,” Yumi Ochiai recalled. “Soon afterwards there were two or three very severe impacts. Cabin seats and cushions all around me broke loose,
then came tumbling down on top of me. I was pinned under some of the cabin seats, and suddenly there was a piercing pain in my stomach. Finally, when all the noise and confusion of impact had stopped, I was able to unfasten my seatbelt. But then I found I was trapped between the seats and couldn’t move at all.”

Somewhere amongst the wreckage around her, she could hear children crying. Their cries were quite loud at first, but gradually they became weaker and weaker, and finally there was only silence. After night fell she heard the sound of a helicopter overhead, but it went away and she lapsed into sleep.
