Even in these austere times we remain a generous country. What are the main reasons people give to charity? Men and women alike list sympathy for the cause as the main reason they give, according to the latest giving trends research, exclusive to CharityInsight. Other popular reasons for donating include, simply, "I was asked" and "I have a connection to the cause". But, in an increasingly secular society, just 5 per cent of men and 3.5 per cent of women name religion as the main reason they give.
