Whitbread has been recognised for its fundraising efforts at the 2011 National Payroll Giving
The UK's largest hotel and restaurant company Whitbread, which includes Premier Inn, Beefeater and Costa Coffee was awarded Best Overall Campaign for its efforts recruiting donors.
Some 20 per cent of its 35,000 staff give via the payroll, generating over £250,000 each year for good causes. In addition, it offers staff a Freedom Account which allows them to manage their donations more flexibily; preferred charities can be supported one month, the next the funds can be used to sponsor friends and family.
It also won the Best Large Employer Campaign.
Other companies recognised on the night included Inventive Leisure, which took Best Launch of a New Scheme and Think Money Group, which was awarded Best SME Campaign. Marie Curie Cancer Care won Best Civil Society Employer Campaign.
Introduced in the 20th year of Payroll Giving, the National Payroll Giving Excellence Awards aimed to recognise and reward employers with successful schemes, as well as those which demonstrate best practice in their promotion to employees. Only employers that received Bronze, Silver or Gold Quality Mark Awards in 2011 were eligible for entry.
"All of the winners have shown how effective and beneficial it is to set up a Payroll Giving scheme in the workplace," said Peter Lewis, chief executive of the Institute of Fundraising, "Charities benefit hugely from Payroll Giving too, to the sum of £114million per year. We wouldn't be able to champion this means of giving to charity without the help of businesses and government, and we're grateful for this invaluable support."
"Government is keen to ensure that we do all we can to promote Payroll Giving among civil servants", said Sir Gus O'Donnell, Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service. "I am delighted to say that we have created a new Inter-Departmental Forum on Payroll Giving, which will have its inaugural meeting later this month. The Forum will bring together every central Government department to share best practice and devise strategies for promoting Payroll Giving to their employees."
