Making its debut in Geneva, the all-new 2017 Aston Martin DB11 is touted as the boldest and most technically advanced vehicle to carry the iconic “DB” designation. The first vehicle to

be launched under the firm’s “Second Century” plan, this exotic successor to the DB9 elevates the sport coupe’s styling, platform and powertrain to deliver what Chief Executive Officer Andy Palmer calls “the absolute embodiment of what an Aston Martin should be.”

Grand Touring redefined

At its core, the 2017 Aston Martin DB11 employs an all-new bonded-aluminium structure that’s expected to see duty in other future Aston Martin products. This ultra-strong, rigid chassis is again wrapped in aluminium body panels but this latest take “reimagines the relationship between form and function,” retaining the classic cues while giving the DB11 a more contemporary feel with improved aerodynamics.

The car’s bolder face gets a more stylized version of the Aston Martin grille flanked by full LED headlamps, all of which are part of a new front-hinged clamshell hood. Bolstering the sleek profile are several devices that help channel air over, under, around and through the DB11. Front lift is reduced by the splitter as well as by “Curlicue” gills in the wheel arches that vent out through a concealed vent in the fender strakes. The tail stay more firmly planted thanks to a new “AeroBlade” setup that uses an intake at the base of the C-pillar to grab air that’s ducted through the bodywork and exits through an opening in the decklid. For extra high-speed stick, there’s also a subtle active spoiler that pops up when needed.

Quicker, faster, more confident

Motivation for the Aston Martin DB11 comes from an all-new 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V12 that makes 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque – the highest output for any DB-spec engine. Backed by a rear-mounted/paddle-shift 8-speed ZF automatic and mechanical limited-slip differential derived from the Vanquish and Rapide S, it lets the DB11 streak from 0-62 mph in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 200 mph. Developed in house, this new V12 also incorporates both start/stop technology and cylinder deactivation to enhance fuel efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions. Although not specifically mentioned at the reveal, the new DB11 also is expected to offer V8 power at some point in the form of a 4.0-liter twin-turbo engine developed by Mercedes-AMG.

To leverage its enhanced performance, the new DB11 benefits from major retuning of the chassis. A stiffer three-stage adaptive damping setup works with new speed-sensitive electric power-assisted steering and Active Torque Vectoring through braking to give the car greater agility whether the driver selects GT, Sport or Sport Plus settings. These modes also modify the DB11’s throttle and shift programming. Keeping it all tied to terra firma are 20-inch diamond-turned 10-spoke alloys wrapped in 255/40 front and 295/35 rear Bridgestone Potenza S007 performance rubber.

Technology with personality

Larger door openings make accessing the new DB11’s cabin easier than on the DB9 and once inside, the 2+2 layout offers significantly more space, particularly in the rear quarters along with expanded cargo room. This luxuriously appointed, handcrafted and leather-lined inner sanctum also introduces a raft of new tech touches developed in concert with its partner Daimler. A new 12.0-inch TFT main instrument display works with a center-mounted 8.0-inch screen that controls the infotainment and standard satellite navigation systems. Other highlights include a full range of power assists, keyless entry/keyless go, a 360-degree camera and a selection of uniquely “tuned and harmonized” audio warnings/notifications that endow the DB11 with its own distinctive “Sonic Identity.” The baseline 400-watt sound system can be swapped for a 700-watt alternative or opt for a 1,000-watt Bang & Olufsen BeoSound package. No less than six Designer Specification interior trim packages also are on offer.

“This is not only the most important car that Aston Martin has launched in recent history, but also in its 103-year existence, noted Palmer. “The DB11 rightfully places Aston Martin once again as a leading brand in the luxury automotive market”. Pricing for the 2017 Aston Martin will start at $214,820.
