What's Old is New Again

Once the truck that had gone the longest without any major updates, the Nissan Titan has returned to the market with a vengeance. It has undergone

a complete overhaul, now with a new platform, engines and styling -- and a ton of capability. In addition, there are now two Titans -- the regular Titan, which will compete with the likes of the Ford F-150, Chevrolet Silverado and Ram 1500, and the Titan XD, which bridges the gap between 1/2- and 3/4-ton trucks.

The Titan XD is less expensive than a 3/4-ton (Silverado 2500HD, Ford F-250, Ram 2500), yet offers some of the heavy-duty strength and capability, plus a turbodiesel V8 option. When the full Titan XD line goes on sale, there will be a regular cab, extended cab and crew cab, with three bed lengths, two engines -- diesel or gas V8 -- and 2- or 4-wheel drive. There are five trim levels: S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve. If you need to tow around 12,000 pounds (such as a horse trailer or large RV), the Titan XD's heavy-duty construction, diesel power and plush interior may be an appealing combination.

Driving It

From our first review of the Nissan Titan XD: "The Titan XD does initially feel like a big truck when you drive it, but that goes away after a few minutes on the road. The interior of the off-road-biased PRO-4X model is very quiet; listening carefully, we could hear a muted lub-lub-lub of the diesel engine, but the excellent work Nissan did on this interior meant that we couldn't really hear the Cummins diesel at work until we rolled down the windows."

Cummins V8 Turbodiesel

Cummins, an engine company known for tough, reliable diesel engines, has been partners with Ram (and Dodge) since the 1980s and is now partners with Nissan for the optional diesel engine in the Titan XD. The 5.0-liter Cummins turbodiesel V8, with 310 horsepower and 555 lb-ft of torque, should entice shoppers who may not have considered Nissan before.
